French regions - Midi Pyrenees
One of France's most enticing and enchanting regions, the Midi Pyrenees, boasts a rich cultural, historical and natural heritage. It is made up of eight departments set in the heart of south-western France and is the largest region in the country.
Inland from the coast, perfectly preserved and fortified medieval villages called "bastides" are tucked away among the craggy Pyrenees Mountains. Here Basque traditions add flavour to travelling through a region with an incredible range of natural sites of unbelievable and dramatic beauty.
The diversity of its landscapes is equalled only by the wealth of its heritage and the friendliness of its people from the valley of the Dordogne and from Gascony to the Gorges du Tarn.
For those hiking, biking or travelling by car, the area covers the departments of Ariege, Aveyron, Lot, Tarn-et-Garonne and Gers.
