French regions - Poitou Charentes

The Poitou-Charentes region has a magnificent 350 km of coastline and is one of the finest destinations for all year round holidays and weekend breaks in France, being the 2nd sunniest region.

From abbeys to chateaux, around 600 monuments testify to a rich past where Roman art left its mark. A land so beautiful it has been the subject of many battles for it’s control between the French and the English monarchy.

Poitiers the ancient capital of Poitou is a fine example of the past and present living together. The mediaeval city is home to Futuroscope one of France’s largest theme parks, based on the use of the most modern multimedia techniques.

Enjoy the soothing nature of the Marais Poitevin (Green Venice) or, further south, take in the annual Circuit des Remparts classic car racing in Angoulême’s medieval centre. Take to the water at La Rochelle, Île de Ré and Île d'Oléron, France’s 2nd largest island. Visit an original Roman Arc de Triomphe in the beautiful town of Saintes or go to Richard the Lionheart’s castle in Niort.

One of the many places worth a visit is the cellars and distilleries of Cognac, where you can visit the distilleries and vineyards of Hennessy, Otard, Remy Martin, Courvoisier and the countless smaller producers.

The departments consist of Charente, Charente Maritime, Deux Sevres and Vienne, come to where the sun shines.
